Honor of Kings Wiki

Umbrosa is a Fighter hero in Honor of Kings.

Background[]

Unlike the rumored Bird Tribe of Misty Marshes, Umbrosa possesses neither sacred wings nor noble character. Only the golden sunlight reflected in her pupils connects her to her past, indicating that she was once the seer Austren. However, when the Bird Tribe fell, she buried that identity along with it. Now, having returned from the abyss, the tattered and scarred Umbrosa has lost everything. In her madness, she imagines that if she can destroy “the root of all evil”, she might be able to restore the true light of the Misty Marshes.

Lore[]

The previous Austren of the Nine Seers, Lumina was the daughter of the Bird Tribe's chieftain. Ever vibrant and free-spirited, she was like a little sun, always bringing light and warmth to those around her. During her studies at the Seerglade Academy, her name was tied to countless stories: skipping classes, causing trouble, venturing into forbidden forests, challenging authority, getting punished with her partners in crime... She bonded with everyone in her year, and even became soul buddies with Donghuang and the late Augran.

However, Lumina's life ended tragically in that disaster twenty years ago. Tales recounted that she fought valiantly as Austren until her final breath. With her fall, the Bird Tribe who served as sentinels perished from history, and became a mere legend of Misty Marshes.

But stories are just that—stories. The witnesses to these events have long since passed, leaving no way to verify the truth. For the storytellers, it's just another "heroic stand in the forest" story. But now the power of life has bloomed again, and the girl who has slumbered in the underworld for twenty years has awaken.

She has returned to the Misty Marshes, but no longer as Austren. Umbrosa's path of destruction has officially begun.

Perfect Plan[]

A figure, long asleep, is jolted awake by the piercing sunlight. She listens as the world comes back to life around her, starting with the cawing of crows that seems to revitalize the nearby trees. She can clearly sense that they are now alive, taking on a lush green hue. Then more sounds fill the air—bugs burrowing out of the ground, birds singing, and... a scavenging vulture swooping toward her! Without hesitation, she opens her eyes and flicks a feathered blade from her fingertips. It only just grazes the vulture's head and almost kills a nearby crow who's waiting to scavenge some leftovers.

"Ah... I've slept too long. I'm out of practice."

Umbrosa rises, stretching her stiff limbs. Everything around her matches her memories, but the endless scorched earth in her long slumber still haunts her like a lingering nightmare.

So how to break free from that dream? A perfectly clear plan slowly forms in her mind.

Step One: Take a Bath

For the living, it is nearly impossible to cross the Marsh of Amnesia. For thousands of years, the deceased of the Misty Marshes have been ferried to its center. Here, their bodies sink into the water and their souls cross the Bridge of Unmissing to reach their final destination. But for Umbrosa, caught between life and death, there is nothing purer or more reflective of her inner self than its waters—perfect for a bath! She washes away the stench of decay, then flies to a treetop and basks in the sunlight while grooming her red feathers. Suddenly, she hears a small figure babbling by the water. Peering down, she sees a reflection slowly taking shape on the water's surface. It's the last face she'd seen before falling asleep. The face smiles shyly at her, seemingly unchanged. Eventually, it rises from the water, overlapping with the girl chattering by the water's edge...

Umbrosa shakes her head. "I slept for so long, I must be seeing things..."

She flaps her wings and lands in front of the girl.

"What an adorable round head!"

Umbrosa grins, and a cold glint flashes from her fingertips.

"Ah... a bird... a bird..." The girl's voice trembles slightly.

"I'm of the Bird Tribe."

"Ahh, a friend, then!"

Umbrosa narrows her eyes and moves closer. The girl jokes around, although beads of sweat start trickling down her forehead. No, it couldn't be... It must have been a trick of the light.

"If fate brings us together, why not make the most of it? My name is Dyadia. Would you allow me to read your fortune?"

Step Two: Get My Fortune Read

Fortune-telling works too. Plans need to be flexible, anyway.

Umbrosa retracts her bladed feathers and asks with interest, "Tell me where I come from."

"Are you going to ask where you're headed next? I thought only old folks liked to ask those kinds of questions. Let me give it a try...

'Friends kept in dreams, but their hair grows gray. Now, the dead and the living must go on their way.'

No, no, that's too grim, might get me smacked...

'Winds and rain brought spring again, yet the flowers do not bloom like way back when.'

No, no, that's worse... Let me just divine for you where you're going!

'Donghuang City you seek, to the east it lies, Beyond the mist, under the skies.' That's it! Your fate lies in Donghuang City!" Dyadia breathes a sigh of relief.

Fate, Donghuang City... Hehe, what fun! You, Donghuang... How could this not be fate?

Umbrosa laughs, spreading her bright red wings. "You've done a reading for me, now how can I repay you?"

Dyadia waves her hands quickly, "Feasts of luxury aren't worth as much as cherishing those before you."

"Hold onto this; it might bring you some luck." Umbrosa takes off toward the east, leaving a full, glowing red feather in Dyadia's hand.

Step Three: Fight

"Let's assume we have a great goal. To achieve it, we must develop a detailed and feasible plan, then work steadily towards it, step by step." When they were at the Seerglade Academy, Guiguzi frequently taught them this, but she never really took it to heart. At that time, there were many around her who were good at making plans. They were willing to prepare backup plans for her wild, whimsical ideas.

But things are different today.

So, she has begun learning to make plans, learning from those who live in the dreams of her past. So far, she thinks she's doing quite well. In fact, she could even say she's doing an excellent job, and she is full of confidence for the upcoming battle.

After all, failure doesn't matter to her, since she is starting from what was supposed to be her end.

From now on, she has all the time in the world...

A Pleasant Game[]

"The Order of the Seers have been embushed. The Aeramber deposits map have been stolen."

It was mere few days since the message arrived at the Marsh of Amnesia, and now, another distress call. Augran decides to rush to the scene.

It is a well-hidden Aeramber deposit conceled by the clouds. A large group of mystics are kneeling on the ground, and each of them has a patch of their hair shaved off, making their heads look like freshly boiled eggs.

"I'm good, upright folk who do things by the book. We were just playing a little game, and then they insisted I take all these. It would've been so mean of me to refuse, no?"

The woman sitting atop the Aeramber pile has skin that was almost transparent, much like that of the countless souls Augran has guided to afterlife. Yet her voice sounded like a living being. Most importantly, the glowing red feathers behind her appears to be the source of danger he has been trying to track down. Because of all this, the usually calm and collected Augran became a little disoriented, wavering between "Who are you?" and "That thing is dangerous!" before blurting out:

"What thing are you?!"

"Thing?! Why don't you try me, then?!"

A flash of light darted toward Augran's head. A quick, sharp exchange of blades followed, before both weapons returned to their respective owners.

"My apologies, it was a slip of the tongue. But is this your idea of a game?"

"Yeah, and we're not done playing yet! I'm still missing a kappa to help me carry this pile of stuff back. You'd do just perfect with a clean buzz off the top!"

Umbrosa leaps toward Augran with a smile, and a single red feather lightly fluttered down as they clash. She catches it gracefully, squinting in the sunlight as she inspects it.

"Hmm? How did this end up with you?" She rememebers giving this 'lucky charm' to that little girl.

Just a few days ago, when Dyadia provided her report, Augran sensed the aura of death and decay that originated from this red feather. He has been chasing the source to no avail, only to meet the culprit now. His voice grows even colder: "It is my duty to eliminate filth and handle hidden dangers."

"The aura's gone. Then why are you still holding onto it?" Umbrosa takes a deep sniff off the feather. "Don't tell me you're secretly in love with me?"

Under the mask, Augran eyebrow twitched.

"Oh wait, no! It's that girl!"

Augran's murderous intent could no longer be concealed.

"Aha, now I remember! There was this evil spirit in the Marsh of Amnesia a few days ago, which the great Lord Augran actually didn't banish. Why, he must've been waiting for that cute little girl to finish her dealings with that evil spirit."

"Oh, and there was this time when..."

Umbrosa continues, as if she had discovered something more amusing than gathering Aeramber. After all, she has no real stake in gathering the stuff, which is merely a supplement for Donghuang's ascension to a superbeing. Nothing important.

A fire has been burning within her rotting flesh for twenty years. It has spread throughout her body, consuming her utterly and leaving nothing but sorrow and anguish in its wake. "I haven't found my remedy yet. As long as this fire endures, Donghuang, you will never be at ease either..." But today, this fire lit something in her heart.

Just now, Augran seemed to had unwittingly turned his glaze somewhere. Somewhere with an important someone. She is eager to see how will this new Augran choose. This apprentice of Xun. Will he choose to save the girl, or will he also make the so-called necessary sacrifice?

"Ah, I've just came up with a game that's even better. This one's just between the two of us!"

Say, one life for one Wonder, good deal? No? Let's throw in her whole family too. Oh, I forgot, she doesn't have a family! Then how about her whole village, her whole tribe, whatever hundreds, thousands of them? Augran, you better pray you can be like the Sky Dome, and shield all the Misty Marshes from what's coming.

Ah, I forgot, the Sky Dome is breaking apart soon too!

Surviving the Rainy Season[]

Outside the window, the bellflowers swayed, washed clean by successive rainstorms. A spider had spun a perfect web between the windowsill and the wall, but the rain is reducing it into a broken curtain of droplets. The spider curls up in a corner, deciding not to risk anything until the rain stopped.

Cirrus gets up to close the window, but just as he did so, someone smashes right through in.

"If I have to go out in the rain again for you in the next three months, I swear I'll be serving up the Misty Marshes' freshest grilled swamp eel that very night!"

"I'm too old for that. And it wouldn't be fresh enough." Donghuang, resting near the fire, didn't need to open his eyes to know who has just returned.

"I've got strong teeth; I don't mind," Cirrus calmly closes the remaining half of the window, and sits back by the fire.

The Donghuang Palace attic is in such disarray, as if no one had ever cleaned it. In truth, with the exception of Yaria occasionally coming by to water the plants, no one had. The beams, made of wood from the Heavenly Tree, has sprouted mushrooms of various colors after being struck by lightning. On such a rainy night, no one wanted to go outside. Cirrus and Donghuang has setup a fire inside, and they are slowly roasting the mushrooms over it.

Umbrosa shakes her wings vigorously, causing the rain on them to scatter like grapeshot.

Donghuang quickly shields the fire, "You're always causing trouble."

"I don't care, my wings are too wet to fly." Umbrosa sits down, wraps her wings around herself, and huddles closer to the fire.

"Why don't other birds have this problem...?"

"I agree," Cirrus frowns as he glances at his own wings, now soaked from the water Umbrosa had shaken off.

"There's a song that goes, 'Let's gather, let's gather, on a rainy night, roasting by the fire, singing songs with great delight...'" Donghuang flips the mushrooms roasting on the fire. Cirrus picks up a black-and-white striped umbrella mushroom, and muses aloud that he would like to hear the ghostly voices of the Path of Passing. Umbrosa picks up the largest blood mushroom, and brings it towards Donghuang's mouth, "Someone should be taking that path instead."

The blood mushroom slowly loses its luster, turning into the same color as the three orbs around Donghuang. He stares into the crackling fire and, without any apparent reason, remarks:

"That day... it was raining like this too."

That day... she was lying in a pool of blood, and her pure white feathers were soaked dark red. The sound of clashing weapons around her gradually faded. She saw her mother lying by her side, wings long broken, with her intestines half-spilled out. The girl next door who would have been coming of age the next day was strung together with the others, like skewered mushrooms. And yesterday she was still eagerly choosing the wood for her circlet of adulthood. That pile over there, they are the two households at opposite ends of the village. There was no sign of life anywhere... Yet still, she waited. She knew they would come, just as she had so many times before.

But she was so tired. Surely she could rest for just a moment? She closed her eyes, and caught a faint whiff of a comforting fragrance. The rain poured harder, until only the sound of rain remained. She didn't feel cold at all; it was as if she were wrapped in a warm, damp silk. Eventually, even the sound of the rain faded away, leaving only a faint scent and a soft, distant voice calling: "Lumina... Lumina... Please, don't sleep, stay with us..."

"Yes, that day when you transformed from Xuance into a that 'eel', it also rained cats and dogs." says Umbrosa as she snaps back from her muddled memories and tosses the withered mushroom back into the fire. She is trying to hide her momentary daze by taking a jab on Donghuang.

"It was also raining like this when Xun became an ugly bag of bones." Donghuang replied without missing a beat, roasting the master of the current Augran of the Marsh of Amnesia.

Umbrosa is obviously perturbed at the mention of that name. She picks up a dry branch and pokes at the fire, stiring up more sparks: "By the way, I've been investigating the Path of Passing. They are either gone for good or had reincarnated, but I couldn't find where the Priest of Fate had gone. Is he still alive?"

"He died long ago."

"Then why on the Path of Passing I didn't see any...?" Cirrus has finally recovered from the mushroom that he had earlier, and joins theis conversation that he hasn't wanted to join.

"He reincarnated as a rain that fell on the Misty Marshes," says Donghuang as the sparks flew higher. His unsettling gaze flickered through the dancing flames and settles on Umbrosa. "You know the Priest of Fate governed life and fate. He traded his life force to bring about a rain of life. During the disaster, the battleground at the border turned to scorched earth, but it was revived with a sliver of life force..." It is rumored that a new mystic has emerged in the forest, who now presided over fate. So, where exactly had the Priest of Fate's "undying life force" gone? How intriguing. Donghuang ponders this with keen interest.

Outside, the rain intensified as it races to pour through the now-broken window. The spider's web has been completely washed away, forcing the spider to retreat into the shadows of the house.

Umbrosa seemed to have thought of something, but quickly dismisses it.

A sleep of twenty years... but who doesn't oversleep their power naps?

Her blood-soaked and ragged feathers are now good as new... why of course, I never skimp on upkeep.

The stench of seers and mystics still disgusted her, but that girl, she smells like... it must be something that she had used in her baths...

Countless thoughts and emotions intertwines like fine threads, weaving a dense web that fills the room.

"I suppose I don't mind the rain so much anymore," Cirrus mused, "The Priest of Fate is quite remarkable indeed."

"Eat your mushrooms," Umbrosa snaps and barges toward the window. She curses and swings at the thin air, as if trying to shake off the thoughts clinging to her like a sticky web, so as to free herself from lingering ties.

"Use the door!" Donghuang shouted after her.

Clank!

Another window gone.
