Luara is a Marksman hero in Honor of Kings.
Background[]
A remnant of the Fire Serpent, a Skyhome orphan, a Rainbow Bay gang member, a nobody rolling around in a pile of ashes... Luara has had many identities, but now she has found her life's purpose. Her red cloak is her symbol of honor and the only reminder of her warm past. She shall bring the power of the Fire Serpent to Rainbow Bay to cleanse it of evil. The Fire Serpents will stand tall on this land once again!
Lore[]
The Fire Serpent was the original deity of the rainforest. The flames in its eyes were the first rays of light in the chaotic darkness. Immigrants who came from across the ocean prayed to the Fire Serpent for land, and it created a Firewall to divide Primaera in two. Then, humans built Rainbow Bay on the land that had been opened up.
Several hundred years later, the well-developed Rainbow Bay was invaded by outsiders due to its rich resources. To protect the shared continent of Primaera, the Fire Serpent reached an agreement with the humans: Those who were brave enough to look directly into the Fire Serpent's eyes would be granted the power of the Fire Serpent. The Fire Serpent team was born. This group of courageous warriors quickly turned the tide of battle. However, after the war, the top military brass paid off a member of the Fire Serpent team. Exploiting the deity's trust, this warrior crossed the Firewall and stole the Fire Serpent's eyes!
Consumed by rage, the Fire Serpent turned the rainforest around it into a scorching inferno. The once lush and verdant land was transformed into a place of unimaginable heat, where the very air itself burned. Humans were forced to build tall shelters that were raised above the ground to survive the high temperatures.Amid this chaos, a pair of Fire Serpent team members were executed for protecting the Fire Serpent. They left behind a daughter, Luara, who was just 5 years old, and a cloak that symbolized the Fire Serpent team's honor.Meanwhile, the traitor who stole the Fire Serpent's eyes basked in the glory of victory. He was hailed as the hero of Rainbow Bay, and he became the only one who could stand up to the Fire Serpent.
Henceforth, the history of the Fire Serpent was retold: "The Fire Serpent turned the rainforest into hell. Anyone associated with the Fire Serpent is a remnant of the evil deity, and they will be executed."
Five-year-old Luara lived as an outcast because of the Fire Serpent cloak her parents had left her. She begged for scraps on Graffiti Street, and she was often bullied and beaten. One day, when she was eight years of age, she met the director of an orphanage. This director was known by the residents of Graffiti Street as a madwoman. However, she took Luara in and gave her a meager, but beautiful, home. The high surface heat meant that those living on the ground suffered immensely. Luara wanted to earn money so that the director could relocate the orphanage. Hence, she left and joined a gang. When Luara had saved enough money, she returned home. However, she realized that the orphanage was not allowed to move because of Luara being associated with the Fire Serpent. For the first time, she hated herself for her lineage. But the director was proud of her. She told Luara the story of her childhood encounter with the Fire Serpent. The director recounted that the Fire Serpent only used its flames to repel invaders. Moreover, Luara's parents were not the followers of some evil deity. Instead, they were great warriors.
Luara accepted her lineage, and all she wanted then was to help the director live more comfortably. She volunteered to build a treehouse, hoping to give the director a home away from the heat. But at the same time, the army decided to launch a siege against the Fire Serpent. Graffiti Street, being the closest area to the rainforest, was instantly razed to the ground. To protect the director, Luara used her power, which made her eyes glow red. Unbeknownst to her, the news that there was a remnant of the Fire Serpent team in Graffiti Street spread like wildfire. To eliminate any possibility of the truth resurfacing, the army immediately carried out a full-scale search of the area. In order to protect Luara, the orphanage director took the Fire Serpent cloak and surrendered. Eventually, she was executed in public.
Luara seemingly accepted all of this with a strange calmness, and she even signed up to join the army. However, after working her way up the ranks, she stole the Fire Serpent's eyes and risked her life to cross the Firewall. The enraged and blinded Fire Serpent caught the scent of Luara's red cloak, and it seemed to recognize an old friend. Luara offered the deity its eyes to prove her loyalty, and she volunteered herself as an ally of the so-called "evil deity." She offered her body to the Fire Serpent in exchange for its power, and she requested that its wrath be unleashed upon Rainbow Bay. Her loved ones and her clan would no longer have to flee and hide, and they could reclaim their lost dignity and land.
Their flames of anger would never be extinguished.
The "Glorious" Sacred Flame[]
"Our walls will extend above the tallest flames, and the evil deity will have nowhere to run to!" Silma finished his inspiring speech for the 47th time, and the base legion began the new day with cheers. The walls were now as high as the shanties in the center of Rainbow Bay, but the Firewall located miles away was still out of sight. Silma turned and entered his shanty. He could feel signs of heatstroke after speaking for nearly ten minutes in the scorching heat. He enjoyed the fresh berries that were just picked that morning, slowly popping them into his mouth. Then, he asked his subordinates to bring the latest roster of the best soldiers so that he could select new candidates for the Sacred Flame Trial. Beneath the fruit bowl sat a glaring secret order, an ultimatum from increasingly impatient superiors. It demanded that the Fire Serpent be dealt with.
"Bah! If you have the guts, do it yourself," Silma said as he spat out a half-rotten berry.
"Bah! If you have the guts, do it yourself." An old soldier, with his half-gray hair obscured by the smoke and dust in the air, huddled in the shadows and spat fiercely in the direction of his superior's shanty.
"Give me a hand, Old Boar!" A red-haired young soldier climbed up the scaffold with a bag of clanking items on her back. Old Boar immediately took the package. This would be their rations for the next week. "I've asked, but there was no tobacco."
The red-haired youngster was as skinny as a rake, with two jet-black eyes set into her dark skin. She was soaked from head to toe as if she had just been pulled from the water. "The ground is getting hotter. The water valves used for cooling have been blocked by someone, and they leak a bit from time to time, like an old man peeing."
"Manners, young lady" Old Boar rummaged through the bag of things and found a piece of bread. He soaked it in water before stuffing it into his mouth."Is that old thing still hanging in the central square?"
"For the last time, don't call her that!" The girl raised her fist in a gesture of defiance. "Cassida is a good person..."
"Hey!" Old Boar quickly stuffed the girl's mouth full of bread. Then, he glanced around as he reproached her softly, "For the last time, this place is full of Silma's lackeys! If you want to die, fine! But don't drag me down with you."
"Old man, you're a lackey too. That's how you've gotten into this base."
"Young lady, there is an art to being a lackey.Look! The high-ranking lackeys are in the cool shanties serving the commander his lunch, while we're stuck mixing cement in the heat."
"There is a way to avoid having to be a lackey.I heard that every once in a while, the best soldiers are selected to participate in the Sacred Flame Trial, and they become Silma's highest-ranking guards."
Old Boar gave her a forceful flick on her forehead. "Have you forgotten what happened to them? How long did they last?A few days at best?"
"It doesn't matter how long I live." The girl looked toward the shanty and muttered to herself, "What matters is how long he'll live, once I have the power of the Sacred Flame."
As she finished, she immediately realized that Old Boar was giving her strange looks. She hurriedly waved her hand, pretending to fan herself. "It's so darn hot. When do you think we'll get that damn snake to stop breathing fire?"
"It's strange. Just over ten years ago, Rainbow Bay was still a dense rainforest..."
Just over a decade ago, Rainbow Bay was still a dense rainforest. The Fire Serpent had appeared on this land long before humans did. However, the humans had always coexisted with the deity, and the two were separated by the Firewall. But even then, Rainbow Bay wasn't peaceful as its rich coastal lands were often invaded. In the face of defeat, the people sought greater power. Hence, a group of brave warriors crossed the Firewall and made a deal with the Fire Serpent. From then on, they became Rainbow Bay's most powerful protectors. One night, the Fire Serpent suddenly became enraged and violent. It indiscriminately attacked all living things, transforming Rainbow Bay into what it is today. The followers of the Fire Serpent from that time have almost vanished...
"I don't know what caused this mess, but it definitely didn't happen the way they tell it. Boitata was never an evil deity to start with."
"Boitata... is that her name?" The girl asked.Old Boar rubbed the last bit of tobacco in his breast pocket. He had just begun to speak when they were interrupted by a military order.
"1,704!"
"Present!"
"Follow up!" The senior officer took the red-haired girl away. Her outstanding performance since joining the army had been noticed. She had been selected for this round of the Sacred Flame Trial.
Before leaving, the girl winked at Old Boar, then turned her head to ask the senior officer innocently, "Sir, where does the Sacred Flame come from?"
"It is a gift from the deities to the Commander, a reward for his courage and kindness!" The officer made no secret of his admiration for the Commander.
When the evil deity first arrived, the ground was scorched to red embers wherever it walked. People had nowhere else to go. Rainbow Bay quickly became a living hell. The Commander couldn't bear it, so he challenged the Fire Serpent to a duel with his mortal self. He fought the beast for three days and three nights. The deities were so impressed that they granted him the secrets of the Sacred Flame. With the Sacred Flame, he defeated the Fire Serpent. That's when it created an insurmountable wall of fire, to save its own life.
"But I heard the Fire Serpent and the Firewall were already there when Rainbow Bay was built?" The girl spoke cautiously.
"Lies! Fabricated by Fire Serpent rebels! They brainwash the poor, trying to tear our society apart from within. They would have us surrender Rainbow Bay to that evil deity! Anyone who defends them will end up just like Cassida." The officer scoffed as he pointed down.
In the central square, Cassida's lifeless body lay piled high with firewood. She was ready to be burned in public.A long, faded red cloak was draped lightly around her.
Outside the lab, the red-haired girl and about a dozen other subjects shouted slogans together: "Evil deity, feel the wrath of humanity!", "Burning earth, quell your endless anger!", "Glorious warriors, for the people of all ages!"
Inside the lab, the girl looked at the two burning fireballs in front of her. She thought back to when she was very, very young. Her mother would tell her a bedtime story: There once lived a mighty Fire Serpent in the rainforest. It had eyes that glowed with fire, like two fireballs of rolling lava. Accept the sparks in its eyes without fear, and you could gain its power. With this power, her parents drove away the invaders intent on destroying their home. They were meant to live happily ever after.
The girl finally figured out that the so-called Sacred Flame Trial was a cover-up for having stolen the eyes of the Fire Serpent.
Not long after, there was a commotion on the ground. A glowing ball of light with flying sparks tore a hole through the crowd. As it shot through the central square, a red cloak fluttered up, extinguishing the sparks for a moment. Then people saw what it actually was: a red-haired girl with two rolling fireballs, running towards the Firewall at high speed.
Silma quickly assembled his Sacred Flame force. Unfortunately, they had to take off their helmets and armor once they got close to the Firewall. It was too hot!The red-haired girl had seemed to rush past untouched, but the flames devoured everyone who tried to approach. Old Boar took the remaining tobacco from his pocket, hands trembling, and wrapped it in paper. He didn't care that some of it fell on the ground. He took a big puff.
"Boitata, Boitata..."
"Lend us your strength. In your name, we swear that no one will ever invade our land again!" They had stared into those burning eyes, holding their glorious weapons aloft, and prayed to the deity for strength.
Now, this red-haired girl stood looking up at the blinded Fire Serpent. Holding out her fiery offering, she shared the deity's frenzied rage.
"If you cannot leave here, let me be your vessel! If the deities are forbidden from killing, let me be your executioner!"
"Boitata!I swear in your name that those who have oppressed us will pay the price!"
Time Stands Still[]
When a person sleeps, the threads of time linger around them. The sun, the moon, the stars. Year after year, the passage of time neatly arranges itself by their side. So, upon waking, an instinctual query from within provides immediate awareness of the current time and their location.
But when someone has enough drinks and falls asleep, time seems to briefly escape those rules. It becomes light and wispy, wrapping itself around them.Luara propped herself up from the broken wooden table. Her bleary eyes settled on a small wooden plate with a row of teeth marks. Without hesitation, she yelled out:
"Cassida, I finished all my food today!"
"Luara... The director, she..." The children of Skyhome gathered around the table and looked at her with concern. Little Lily, the youngest, approached with a cup of water held carefully in both hands.
Luara felt that something was very much out of place. This plate... wasn't it the one Cassida knocked her out with when she first came to Skyhome to steal food? Then later, it became Luara's plate. While teething, she would gnaw on the plate every time she waited for food. Cassida could tell which tooth Luara was losing by the marks left behind. However, she was now more than capable of going toe-to-toe with Cassida. She remembered Silma's men came to Graffiti Street to search for the remnants of the Fire Serpent. But how did Cassida manage to knock her out with this plate?
"You've had too much to drink." Boitata's voice poured like mercury into her crown, crushing the hazy memories under its weight.
"I know."
"Today marks the completion of the new Skyhome."
"I know."
"We've captured the most important part of the Tall Shanties area.
"I know."
"The ribbon-cutting ceremony just ended. The children of Skyhome came to find you for a drink. They're very happy!" "I know."
"Cassida is dead."
"Enough! I know."
Luara looked around the room. Most of the objects here had been brought from the original Skyhome.
"That high bed with the hollowed-out design, that's from when I was a child. I had such bad prickly heat! Regular beds would make me cry as soon as I lay down. So Cassida spent a whole day making that for me."
"That pillar shows the height of every child in Skyhome. It gets marked each year until they turn 16. Mine was only marked up to 15 — that's when I left to join the gang. When I came back two years later, Cassida got hold of me and looked me over carefully. She scolded me, saying I shouldn't have been so reckless. She said had she known I didn't care about my life, she wouldn't have brought me back and fed me. It was just a few scars, you know! I was just trying to earn some darn money to help her live better."
Luara stood up and walked out of the house. She almost walked out into thin air! Thankfully, she remembered just in time that the new Skyhome was built in the tallest tree in Rainbow Bay.
"Cassida had us living as close to the ground as you could get, but she called it Skyhome!" Luara said, as if she was telling a joke."I wanted to surprise her, so I took the money I'd earned and applied to relocate the orphanage. They refused without even looking at it. They said there were remnants of the evil deity in Skyhome."
"I was shocked! I thought she lived in that hot and humid place because she didn't have any money, but it turns out she always had money. She just couldn't move because I was living there."
The wind blew the red cloak on Luara's waist that represented the Fire Serpent team. It had been worn by her parents, then by young Luara, then by Cassida, and finally returned to her.
"I had a big fight with her. I threw the cloak into the fire and she quickly picked it back out. I told her to take a stick and chase me out!
But she said that she didn't do it just for me. She knew that the great serpent of the rainforest was not an evil deity. She was defending you!"
"She said that she didn't know why the deity lost control and ended up destroying the land it was supposed to protect. It must have been very angry, she said, or maybe sad. Perhaps something in Rainbow Bay is hurting it, but it's not an evil deity at all."
"She said it was because you roasted a rabbit for her."
"She remembered wrong. A deity wouldn't roast a rabbit for a mere mortal."
"She said it was a little burnt."
"Impossible! My flames control the temperature perfectly."
"..."
"..."
"Boitata, I want to eat rabbit!"
"Why don't we go cook something else?"
Together with Boitata, Luara gazed across at the high tower of Rainbow Bay.She heard the sound of a plate being knocked in a certain way. This was a sound from her childhood. It meant that Cassida's bread was ready to come out of the oven.Although time seemed to have disappeared, it was in fact still there, wrapping itself around her like a silkworm spinning its cocoon.
