Lore[]
Ye, the capital city of the Wei kingdom, is a city of slaughter. The hustle and bustle of merchants is totally absent amidst its perennial yellow sands. Absent as well is the warbling song of birds. The only sound is that of armies marching among the rushing sands.
And yet Cai Yan loves this place. It's the place where she grew up, with all the people she cared about: her great foster father Cao Cao, the taciturn yet caring Dian Wei, along with those nameless soldiers with whom she loved to play. It is because of this love that Cai Yan wants to protect the place. Even as a young child, her mastery of the Hujia lute could always bring a smile to the citizens of Ye's faces with a cheery tune or two.
The lute was an heirloom gifted to her by her father, Cai Yong. As such, it also represented her deep affection for him. Her father was murdered when she was just a little girl, after which she was brought to Ye by Cao Cao, who claimed to be her father's dear friend, and raised as his foster daughter. Accompanying them on this journey to Ye was Dian Wei, her father's apprentice.
Dian Wei was an inarticulate man, but he was never at a loss for words when speaking of Cai Yong. Cai Yong had been his beloved teacher, a truly remarkable person and such a keen scholar that even Jixia Academy's knowledgeable sage Fuzi held him in high regard. Over the course of his lifetime, Cai Yong visited numerous sites to study ancient sorcery, and the Hujia lute was among the artifacts unearthed during his devoted research. Only regarding the circumstances of Cai Yong's death had Dian Wei never uttered a single word. Whenever the topic was brought up, he seemed to choke up and stumble over his words with a pained expression plastered on his face.
Cai Yan could hardly remember anything about her father, and as Dian Wei was unable to provide details, she eventually mustered up the courage to inquire with her foster father, Cao Cao. Cao Cao replied, "At the time, your father had just obtained an artifact capable of combatting demonic sorcery. That's why his so-called 'friend' from the city of Yi had him killed." "But who would want to harm my father?" Cai Yan asked. "A man whose learning was second only to your father's, who was drunk on demonic sorcery and wanted to steal his ancient artifacts." After pausing for a long moment, Cao Cao finally spoke the man's name aloud: "It was Kongming." Had these words been spoken by anyone else, Cai Yan would not have believed them. But she admired Cao Cao above all others.
Shortly thereafter, Ye went to war with Yi. To do her part for her beloved Ye and to avenge her father's death, Cai Yan asked Dian Wei to bring her with him to fight on the front lines. The battle was brutal, but even more brutal was the truth that would soon be revealed: that the man who murdered her father to steal his artifacts was none other than the man she had adored from childhood—Cao Cao himself. The treasure Cao Cao actually sought was the imperial jade seal hidden within her lute. The devious man would do anything to get his hands on it. Had he known that it was in Cai Yan's possession, he would not have thought twice about murdering her in cold blood.
Fortunately, Cai Yan had Dian Wei. Dian Wei had known of Cao Cao's plot all along, but was forced to keep mum in exchange for Cai Yan's safety. To protect the daughter of his beloved master, Dian Wei could only hearken the call of darkness and transform into a bloodthirsty beast. Still to this day, the battle-scarred beast is willing to put it all on the line for the girl. "Get out of here!" Faced with the impending danger, Dian Wei slams the ground with his giant axe, cleaving a rift in the earth between himself and the girl. Cai Yan sprints to flee, carrying with her not only her father's imperial jade seal, but also a hope for the life that Dian Wei fought so hard to secure for her. "A beautiful young woman dances upon the battlefield, her Hujia lute endlessly strumming!"
