Honor of Kings Wiki

Augran is a Fighter hero in Honor of Kings.

Background[]

Qi's life should have been filled with light and joy. He was friendly, outgoing, and full of youth and laughter. But then the Wilting happened, and a sudden disaster took all of his friends overnight. Qi carries this pain in his heart as he marches on. With his spear, he cut himself off from the past and settled in the marshes. Now, he is Augran, the ruthless High Priest who commands the power of life and death, and the only one who can put an end to the Wilting.

Lore[]

As the High Priest, Augran is feared by all. But as Qi, he bears his mission alone.

When he was a child, Qi lived with his grandmother in the Forest Temple. Later, he set out to save Dyadia, a girl who had been displaced by the Wilting. Since then, the two stuck together, and vowed to join the Order of the Seers and protect the forest. But then the Wilting struck again, wiping out his grandma's Forest Temple.

After that, he was taken in by his master. Working hard to join the Order of the Seers, he carried his and Dyadia's oath with him.

With every strike of his spear, every incantation, and every spirit returned to its eternal resting place, another piece of that cheerful Qi disappeared.

Every day when returning home, he developed the habit of bowing his head and gazing into the Pool of Shadows as he walked by, watching the bright reflections disappear one by one...

The Pool of Shadows will show you the silhouettes of the people you love. His master told him that once there was none left, he was ready to become the High Priest.

A High Priest cannot afford to have emotions.

That day finally came when his master, who had always preached the importance of not giving in to emotion, was so overcome with his obsessions that he transformed into an evil spirit.

Full of anguish, Qi banished his master's spirit with his spear. He was now destined to be Augran the High Priest, with no path back to his former self.

When Qi opened his eyes, his pupils had transformed, heaven and earth had changed, the pulse of the world was still, and his burning heart had run cold.

Tragedies without end had plagued this land. Now, he would be the one to end them. The Wilting, the broken Sky Dome, all would end when the Nine Seers patched up the sky.

He stepped out of the Marsh of Amnesia. The world lay roiling and clamoring before him.

Qi is dead. I am the Augran, High Priest of the Seers.

Praying for a Place to Return to[]

"Grandma, where do people go when they die?"

"When you die, you go to the Marsh of Amnesia. That's where all souls return to." This was the first time that Qi's grandmother had given him an answer.

"What about the people who don't return to the Marsh of Amnesia? What about them?"

"They turn into evil spirits who wander the roads at night, pouncing on those who pass by."

"So always remember to come home after a long day of playing outside. Don't be like your parents. I'll always be at home waiting for you."

Qi had always loved to play, but no matter what, he always remembered to go back home, because he knew that his grandma would be waiting for him.

He had always been scared of ghosts and the dark. He was scared to go outside at night and would only go if his grandmother was with him. As long as she was there, he wasn't scared.

Although he didn't know what a "Marsh of Amnesia" was, he knew that his grandma's Forest Temple was his place to return to.

But then the Wilting came. The Forest Temple was destroyed in a fire, and his grandmother, Dyadia, and his friends were all killed. Suddenly, everything was gone. From that day forward, there was nowhere to return to after a day of playing outside.

Carrying his and Dyadia's promise to join the Order of the Seers and protect the forest, he went to the High Priest and asked him to take him on as his apprentice. He wanted to stop tragedies like that of the Forest Temple from happening ever again.

The marshes had always been home to all kinds of evil spirits that had been born out of obsession. They preyed on the emotions of the living, and would transform the newly departed into evil spirits themselves. The High Priest is the guardian seer of life and death. He slays evil spirits and shelters the souls of the dead on their passage to the next life.

At the entrance to the Marsh of Amnesia, Qi encountered his first evil spirit.

She wandered near the crossing all day, grabbing one soul after another and asking them: "Qi, have you seen my little Qi?"

As a spirit, she was exposed to the world. She suffered from the harsh sunlight, the biting winds, and from the loneliness in her heart. Newly departed souls crossed over one after another, but she stayed put, refusing to cross.

"Don't be scared, Qi. Grandma is right here waiting for you. I'll be with you soon."

Seeing this, Qi broke down in tears. This was the first evil spirit that he'd seen, and it was his grandmother, waiting in vain for him to arrive. This obsession had transformed her into an evil spirit.

She could only contain herself for so long, and Qi could only look on as his grandmother's spirit pounced on a newly departed soul. Without hesitating, the old High Priest brought his spear down before she could catch it.

As the spear fell, he saw a loving smile appear on his grandmother's face. Her little Qi had finally returned.

"Qi, I told you I'd be waiting for you."

His grandmother fractured into fragments and dissipated. Now, there was no trace of her in the world. She would be unable to return to the Marsh of Amnesia, and she would never be reborn. They would never meet again.

"Qi, don't be sad. On this endless journey, no two souls could never part." Qi remembered the words his grandmother had said to him, back when they were talking about death on that starry night long ago.

But now, everything was like ripples fading in the water. Qi felt like he was alone on a ship with no rudder, floating adrift on the sea of the world with nowhere to return to.

"Qi, a High Priest cannot afford to have emotions," his master said coldly next to him.

For Qi, his grandma's Forest Temple was his place to return to. But for the people of the Misty Marshes, their place of return was the Marsh of Amnesia. As long as the marsh was still there, the people who were still alive felt hope in their hearts, felt that their life had meaning. Because they knew that they would eventually meet their loved ones again, and that they would not become souls wandering alone for all eternity

Qi did not want people to lose their place of return, nor did he want them to completely disappear like his grandmother. He wanted to protect them on their journey.

"I want to be the High Priest!" Qi said to his master firmly.

The Emotionless High Priests[]

As Qi studied to become the new High Priest, his master would always say to him: "The High Priest cannot afford to have emotions."

"One day, you will lead the seers to put an end to the Wilting."

"If they will not follow, you must be the one to wield the spear, because you are the High Priest with the power of life and death."

As the Wilting worsened, more and more evil spirits began to appear. With great pain, Qi dispatched those souls who were never meant to become evil spirits, while his master stood by, his face cold, refusing to intervene.

As the seasons passed, Qi gradually developed as a priest, his emotions slowly fading.

And yet, when the accident which took his master happened, Qi wasn't prepared to see his master transform into an evil spirit before his eyes.

Qi didn't understand how his master, who had always told him he "couldn't afford to have emotions", could still have obsessions in his heart that he couldn't let go of.

He also didn't understand how his master, who had always looked at him with such coldness, who had always told him "no", could still become his closest companion, his confidant. While he had his master's Marsh of Amnesia, he would have a place of return.

So, when Qi's master passed away, the emotions that he had restrained for so long suddenly and unexpectedly broke out in the most intense sorrow he had ever known.

Qi raised his spear without thinking, but because of these sudden strong emotions, he sank into a stupor.

The evil spirit of a High Priest who had power over life and death is far more powerful than other spirits, and its destructive power is even more astonishing.

At this moment, countless lives were cut short. As they transformed into evil spirits, they surged toward Qi to vent their grief and unhappiness. At this moment, the loneliness of the new and old High Priests intertwined and spread. Plants and trees wilted, all life died, and a great Wilting began, caused by the High Priests themselves.

When Qi came to, evil spirits were running rampant.

The day of this irreversible mistake was also the day that Qi became a true High Priest. The former High Priest had succumbed to his obsessions and become an evil spirit. While taking his place, Qi had given in to his emotions, leading to the senseless death of countless living beings.

This was the moment when Qi finally understood why "a High Priest cannot afford to have emotions."

Carrying the guilt for this event with him, Qi became the Third High Priest. He would always remember this fiasco.

In the years that followed, Qi always stayed true to the idea that "the High Priest cannot afford to have emotions."

At Greenpeak, he took on the solemn duty passed down to him. He would be known as Augran, High Priest of the Order of the Seers.

This warmhearted seer found the record of how to mend the sky in an ancient scroll, and reading the words, Qi finally understood the obsession in his master's heart.

His master had always believed that the failure to mend the sky was his fault for showing kindness, and that the Wilting and the series of tragedies which befell the marshes were all a result of him not controlling his emotions. He couldn't stop blaming himself, and eventually turned into an evil spirit.

In the hopes of preventing such a mistake from being repeated, he had raised Qi to never to give in to emotion.

Quiet as water, Qi read the entire text. There was no visible sadness in that seer's eyes, just a shadow of his former self. He closed up the scroll and left quietly.

As the new High Priest, Qi would also meet the girl that he had thought was long dead.

The woman in front of him was different from the girl in his memory, but Qi was convinced that it was Dyadia. The woman didn't recognize Qi. The seer wearing the mask in front of her, this emotionless High Priest, did not acknowledge her. There was not even a flicker of recognition in his eyes.

Qi also began to ask the Order of the Seers to observe Donghuang City.

Since Donghuang had established himself as an Omniscient, the conflict between him and Qi and had become irreconcilable. The emotionless High Priest dealt with everything logically. When it came to the Misty Marshes and the Sky Dome, he had reasons to never give in, and knew that there would come a day when the two of them would do battle. But as the Nine Seers had still not assembled, it wasn't yet time to act. Perhaps Donghuang was waiting for his chance, too.

The Wilting continued to spread, and the number of evil spirits continued to increase. The path of the High Priest continued. He didn't know when the end of the Wilting would come, but he knew that it would come eventually, and that he was prepared to give up everything to achieve it.

Dreamless Amnesia[]

[1] It rarely rained in the Marsh of Amnesia, but when it did, it was the fault of one young and inexperienced man.

The young man crossed the bridge between life and death, and in the pool's reflection, he saw the shadows of old friends. However, those shadows had become increasingly faint, and by now they were barely visible.

On the other side of the bridge stood another young man with a cold face, carrying a blue umbrella. He looked over without emotion.

The young man removed his bamboo hat and addressed him respectfully: "I made an error. I accept my punishment!"

"I know."

The young man spread out his palms, and a ghostly blue shard appeared in the center. This was the evil spirit which he was supposed to destroy.

With a wave of his hand, the shard poured into the Amnesia River and flowed away.

"How many times have you failed? Qi, you're the future High Priest. You should know not to slip up."

"He gave up his life to save an innocent. He shouldn't have become a spirit." The young man explained.

"Matters of life and death are never fair. When did you start thinking about 'should' and 'should not'? Remember, as the High Priest, your job is to kill evil spirits. That's all."

"Qi, a High Priest cannot afford to have emotions. The more you love, the more damage you do down the road."

[2]

Qi knelt down with his spear and accepted the Mask of the High Priest from his master.

"Qi, from this day forward, you will be the third High Priest of the Misty Marshes. In the future, life and death in the marshes will be yours to control."

It was also on that brilliant day that the warm Qi of the mortal world was gone. All that was left was the unfeeling Augran.

The unfeeling Augran stood at the Amnesia ferry crossing, safeguarding the passage of the dead.

He would stand at the top of the green trees, watching the rhythm of the wind. In the depths of the Marsh of Amnesia, he would listen to the muttering of the trees. He would appear wherever there were evil spirits to protect the peace of the marsh, and on quiet days, he would attend ceremonies to send off souls.

People both feared and loved the Augran, and they would go to the Hall of the High Priest to pray, sincerely believing that so long as the High Priest was there, life and death would remain safe.

[3]

"Qi, your whole life should have been so full of light and joy." The voice of his grandmother spoke to him in a dream.

It was as if Qi had returned to an ordinary afternoon. The dappled sunlight shone through the leaves of the trees, and he was rolling up his long pants, spearing fish beside the river. Dyadia was next to him, helping him by carrying the basket.

The sun was setting, and Qi and Dyadia returned with their basket full of fish. A long way away, his grandmother walked with her friends from the Forest Temple, bamboo baskets of fruit in their hands.

If it hadn't been for the Wilting, Qi's life would still be this ordinary.

[4]

The Ceremony of the Nine.

On this day, the scattered Order of the Seers of the Misty Marshes would gather at the Sacred Spring.

Augran formally took over responsibilities from his predecessor, presiding over the ceremony. From this day, the Order of the Seers would be led by the Third High Priest.

One of the seers looked into the past, then turned back to Augran: "The future of the Misty Marshes now lies in your hands."

Augran nodded to the seer, took a step forward, and walked over to the ancient sacrificial objects. The power of life and death rose through his spear and a mighty force surged outward. All was silent, and the crowd stood dazed. Then, the power of the seer followed, slowly trickling over the plants and trees.

Under the auspices of the two great seers, the superbeing Nuwa emerged, and the masks of the previous Nine Seers appeared one by one.

Augran chanted the ancient song of the seers, bleak and primal.

"The glow of the music calls the deities of the marsh."

The seer followed behind, and they thanked the Heavenly Tree for nourishing all life in the Misty Marshes.

"Praise the Sky Dome, that waters the wood."

The Order of the Seers came next as the spirit of nature burst forth and wild grasses and trees spread out in all directions, as if every living thing was right there in front of them.

"Deep roots and bountiful leaves. The forest and the creatures chime together as one."

A woman with flowing sleeves joined in the chanting.

"Let the music spread throughout the land."

In that ancient and pious ceremony, their singing began loud, then distant, and finally faded away.

...

The Ceremony of the Nine was complete. Night fell and the moon hung brightly in the sky.

During the ritual, the Augran made two announcements: First, to face the Wilting, the seers should strive to find the unearthly seer, the one who had not yet shown himself, and strengthen their mastery over the Flow.

Second, with the recent weakening of the Sky Dome, the Wilting had intensified in strength, so stabilizing it had become more and more urgent. This was not only a source of unease for the seers, but also a concern for the Order itself.

But the innocent and pure people of the marshes would not remain distressed for long. They trusted that the seers would find a solution.

As the moon slowly passed above the treetops, they began to chat, share stories, and discuss life's problems just like old times. They drank, made merry, and sang softly to the moon.

The Ceremony of the Nine was always the seers' favorite day. It was the only time they could connect with friends that they had not seen for a long time.

Augran went alone back to Greenpeak, the main hall of the Order of the Seers. The heritage and duties left by past generations of the Order were all held there, and the bright moonlight shone down on his shoulders as he opened an ancient tome. The first seer song he learned as a child growing up in a grass hut came back to him.

"Oh how bountiful the harvest of the marsh, how joyous we are that the deities watch over us."

Once, it was a dream. Now, it was his duty.

At the Ceremony of the Nine, people would make pious prayers to the Nuwa and the first Nine Seers.

On this special night, the Augran said a prayer too. He hoped that there would be no more people like Dyadia who lost their homes to the Wilting, no more people like his grandmother who became evil spirits because of the Wilting, and no more people like his master who sacrificed themselves because of the Wilting.

He hoped that everyone could live in the marshes in peace, that they all had a place of return.

That was the cycle of life and death, and he would be the one to protect it.
